I’ve had a few false starts so far, but one note I keep coming back to says “Imperfect action beats perfect inaction” I’m gonna try live by that a little more than I usually do.

I read so much about football, scouting, analysis, hell even articles on how to become a football analyst. But I’ve lacked doing anything proper so far, let me change that. I’m happy right now in the job that I’m doing, but a dream goal would be working in the football industry in a data focused role. I know entry level jobs like this pay crap, so my idea is to work on my technical skills, keep grinding the 9-5 and if we can get some traction from publishing work in my spare time that’s going to set me up quite well.

Here’s a nice forest photo that came with the WordPress theme to keep you rolling.

I seem to be so good at carrying out other peoples plans and ideas but never able to make the effort for myself. I’ve done some good like setting up an online shop that helped a greengrocers manage the pandemic, I’ve built a platform for people to apply for mudlarking permits through (that was so easy Historic England had to put a stop to it). I can take a real nasty data warehouse table, build a customisable mapping look-up, surface a reporting dashboard on top of it while saving useful functions or data products for the next task, but I just never seem to do that final step – explaining what/why I have done this or the actions that should be taken to go forwards.

You can’t just say x player has the most shot creating actions in league y, you need to put context to what they are doing and how they are doing that. Then there’s the idea of tactical fit in a new team, what’s their ability worth, will that carry accross, what are the untangibles a dataset won’t show you.

These may have just been a few incoherent groups of words but I will improve, or maybe I’ll just get an understanding on what I wan’t to talk about. But one thing for sure – this is the start of a true start.
